Alliant Energy's Battery Storage Plan at Golden Plains Wind Farm in Iowa Stalled by County Concerns
Alliant Energy's proposal to add battery storage at the Golden Plains Wind Farm in northern Iowa is on hold after the Kossuth County Board of Adjustment denied its permit request. Alliant proposed a joint agreement with Kossuth County as a potential solution, but the county attorney advised against it.
The county attorney noted that any new application from Alliant would need significant changes. The Golden Plains Wind Farm, operational since 2020, spans Kossuth and Winnebago counties. County leaders inquired if the battery facility could be constructed outside Kossuth County.
Alliant began planning the project in 2023 and has a state permit. The company is also expanding battery storage at other locations in Iowa, including two projects at the Whispering Willow North Wind Farm and a former coal facility in Lansing, along with existing facilities in several cities.
