AlphaGen Proposes Repowering and Battery Projects for NYC's Grid Reliability
AlphaGen has submitted a proposal to Con Edison to address New York City's long-term electric system needs. The proposal includes the Gowanus and Narrows Repowering Projects, which aim to replace outdated power generation units with three new, lower-emitting barges, delivering 819 MW of capacity. The project will reduce emissions by over 50% and is designed to be hydrogen-ready. Additionally, battery storage systems are proposed to complement the repowering efforts, ensuring immediate and sustained support during peak demand and extreme weather.

AlphaGen has responded to Con Edison's Request for Information with a proposal to improve long-term electric reliability in New York City. Central to the proposal are the Gowanus and Narrows Repowering Projects, which intend to replace six existing barges with three new low-emission units, providing 819 MW of capacity.
This upgrade aims to cut emissions intensity by over 50% and is aligned with hydrogen readiness. AlphaGen also plans to implement battery energy storage systems to support the grid during fluctuations. The proposal complements the state's clean energy goals while addressing immediate reliability concerns.
