Alsace Nature Opposes Microsoft Data Center Project in Petit-Landau
The environmental group Alsace Nature opposes Microsoft’s planned €2 billion data center near Mulhouse, citing excessive energy consumption and heat generation concerns. With operations expected to use 80% of Haut-Rhin's annual electricity, the project raises significant environmental issues.

Microsoft plans to initiate construction of a data center in Petit-Landau in early 2027, with the first building expected to become operational by 2030 and full site completion aimed for 2032. Alsace Nature highlights that the facility's operation will account for 80% of Haut-Rhin's electricity consumption, raising questions about the source of this power, likely from local hydroelectric plants.
Additionally, the center is expected to generate a heat dome effect, increasing local temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, impacting both residents and surrounding ecosystems. A public inquiry concerning the project is open until July 3.
