Amazon Acquires GW University's Virginia Campus for $427 Million to Develop Data Center
Amazon has acquired George Washington University's Virginia Science and Technology Campus for $427 million, approximately $3.5 million per acre for 122 acres intended for a data center. This acquisition aligns with Amazon's strategy to invest $35 billion in data centers in Virginia by 2040, following a similar investment of $35 billion in the past decade.
The sale will help GW strengthen its financial position and create an endowment for research and education. Local government regulations have tightened around data center approvals, reflecting community concerns about zoning and energy resources, indicating a shift in how such developments are managed in the region.
