Amazon Expands Quantum Computing Operations in Pasadena, Clarifies No AI Data Center Plans
Amazon confirmed that its newly acquired 168,000-square-foot building in Northern Pasadena will be used to enhance its quantum computing efforts, not to establish an AI data center. This facility will support research and development, expanding work previously initiated through a partnership with Caltech in 2021. Concerns about a potential data center arose at a City Council meeting, but Amazon stated no plans have been submitted for such a facility.

Amazon has clarified that its acquisition of a 168,000-square-foot building at 2964 Bradley St. in Northern Pasadena will be dedicated to expanding its quantum computing research, not for an AI data center as rumored. The facility will support ongoing work that began with the AWS Center for Quantum Computing in collaboration with Caltech.
Concerns were raised at a City Council meeting regarding the potential for a data center, but city officials confirmed no applications have been submitted. The issue of data centers is being discussed in relation to their power consumption and impact on local infrastructure.
