Amazon Web Services (AWS) is assessing a potential data center campus adjacent to the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, with no formal proposal submitted yet. The project aims to enhance local infrastructure and workforce opportunities, potentially generating $45 million annually in tax revenue.
Since 2010, Amazon has invested $19.4 billion in Maryland, supporting approximately 23,000 jobs. The site is zoned for heavy industrial use, facilitating development without rezoning. AWS plans to utilize existing water systems for cooling, minimizing new water needs.
Local unions anticipate job creation during construction and ongoing operations, with significant wages for skilled trades. Community input is currently being gathered as proposals remain in preliminary stages.
