Amazon Plans Walmart-Style Supercenters with Robotics and AI Under Project Kobe
Amazon is developing large-format supercenters, known as Project Kobe, that integrate grocery and general merchandise with automated fulfillment centers. Initial locations include Orland Park, Cherry Hill, Edison, and Oak Brook. The stores aim to carry around 250,000 items and rely on AI for inventory management. However, the project faces higher operating costs and challenges related to grocery demand and inefficiencies in order fulfillment.

Amazon's Project Kobe involves creating supercenters that blend grocery and general merchandise with robotic fulfillment capabilities. The first store is planned for Orland Park, IL, with additional sites in Cherry Hill, Edison, and Oak Brook, NJ.
Each location will feature a significant automated storage area, with 100,000 square feet dedicated to warehouse space. The stores are projected to carry about 250,000 items, nearly doubling typical Walmart offerings.
However, the operating costs are expected to be higher due to inefficiencies in picking perishable goods. AI-driven tools will assist in inventory management, but the system is still in development. The first Kobe location is anticipated to open in late 2027.
