Amazon Web Services Proposes $7 Billion Data Center in Wheatfield, Indiana
AWS plans to invest $7 billion in a new data center in Wheatfield, Indiana, projected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions. The initiative aims to enhance local tax revenues significantly while addressing community concerns regarding environmental impact and resource usage.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is engaged in discussions with NIPSCO and Jasper County to establish a data center on a 304-acre site near the Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield. If approved, the project would require an investment of $7 billion, resulting in thousands of temporary jobs and hundreds of permanent roles.
AWS has committed to pay $90 million upfront and $22 million annually over a decade, boosting local tax revenues from $1.2 million to over $420 million in community impact payments over 15 years. The data center is designed to utilize natural air cooling, minimizing water usage to less than that of a golf course.
The planned infrastructure investments include $20 million in water projects for community benefit. Ongoing discussions aim to address local concerns over environmental impact and utility rates.
