Amazon Web Services to Establish Data Center in La Puebla de Híjar, Teruel, Spain
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is set to build its first major data center in La Puebla de Híjar, Teruel, aimed at enhancing the region's technological profile in Europe. The project involves an investment of at least €5 billion, contributing to a total of over €15 billion invested by AWS in Aragón, with projections indicating a potential €47 billion across various operators in the region.
The data center will require 100 megawatts of electricity and approximately 350,000 cubic meters of water per year for cooling. This initiative has sparked debates about energy and water use in a historically depopulated area.
Construction is anticipated to commence in 2027, pending administrative approvals, including a Declaration of General Interest from the Government of Aragón. The project aims to create around 6,800 jobs, with a focus on stable positions in technical fields, and is expected to foster a local ecosystem for digital economy initiatives.
