Ameren Commences Construction on Big Hollow Energy Center in Missouri
Ameren has officially started construction on the $900 million Big Hollow Energy Center in Jefferson County. This facility will feature an 800-megawatt natural gas generation unit alongside a large-scale lithium-ion battery installation, marking Missouri's first integrated production and storage facility.

Ameren's Big Hollow Energy Center project, valued at $900 million, has begun construction in southern Jefferson County, following a groundbreaking ceremony attended by about 50 officials and community representatives. The facility includes an 800-megawatt natural-gas generation unit and a lithium-ion battery storage system.
The project builds on the previous Rush Island coal plant site, utilizing existing infrastructure such as the switchyard. A new 9.5-mile natural gas pipeline is being constructed to supply fuel from Monroe County, Illinois.
The project is set to be completed by mid-2028. This development is expected to enhance local employment and tax revenues, continuing the area's legacy of electricity production.
