American Electric Power (AEP) plans to upgrade the John Amos coal-fired power plant near Charleston, West Virginia, to comply with EPA regulations while rebuilding aging infrastructure. First Energy signed onto Governor Morrisey's '50 by 50' plan to increase West Virginia's energy generation capacity from 15 to 50 gigawatts by 2050, investing $1.4 billion from 2022 to 2024 and planning an additional $3.5 billion for new power plants.

Dominion's expansion targets include generating 17,534 MW from solar, 3,460 MW from wind, 2,000 MW from battery storage, and 9,454 MW from natural gas by 2034, with no plans to expand coal capacity. The state aims to position itself as a hub for data centers, critical for national security against foreign competition. Innovations like multi-day iron batteries from Form Energy could enhance energy storage capabilities while reducing reliance on lithium, dominated by China.
