AMF Den Boer and Grupo Bimbo Test Hydrogen-Fired Baking Technology
AMF Den Boer and Grupo Bimbo successfully retrofitted a baking zone to use Direct Hydrogen Fired burners, confirming hydrogen's viability as a natural gas alternative. This development supports the broader industry goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations.

In October 2025, AMF Den Boer retrofitted an existing bread oven, originally installed in 1998, with twelve Direct Hydrogen Fired (DHF) burners, achieving a total maximum output of 192 kW (655,000 BTUs). During a two-week test, the oven zone demonstrated the feasibility of using hydrogen (H2) as a heat source, maintaining product quality and safety.
The hydrogen combustion led to improved energy efficiency and reduced natural gas consumption in other zones. Despite challenges with burner ignition, target baking temperatures were consistently achieved. Further engineering improvements are required for permanent implementation, but the project confirms the potential for hydrogen in industrial baking applications.
