AMP Robotics Increases Waste Processing Capacity in Virginia through SPSA Partnership
AMP Robotics has expanded its Portsmouth facility's processing capacity to 108,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually under a 20-year partnership with SPSA. The project aims to increase recycling rates and decrease landfill reliance, impacting over 1.2 million residents in the region.

AMP Robotics Corporation, via Commonwealth Sortation LLC, has increased its Portsmouth facility's capacity to 108,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually, part of a long-term partnership with the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA). The facility upgrades are designed to ultimately handle up to 540,000 tons per year, enhancing recycling recovery and reducing landfill waste.
This expansion is expected to create around 100 local jobs and establish the region as a leader in innovative waste management. AMP is also preparing a second sortation facility to be operational by late 2027 and plans to produce biochar from organic waste, potentially diverting five million tons from landfills over two decades. The partnership aligns with broader sustainability goals and reflects a significant investment in local infrastructure.
