Amsterdam Aims to Establish Offshore Wind Turbine Recycling Hub
Amsterdam's offshore cluster seeks to create a comprehensive recycling framework for decommissioned wind turbines, addressing an emerging industrial sector. The region aims to integrate dismantling, material recovery, and recycling processes as the first generation of North Sea wind farms reach the end of their operational life.

Amsterdam, IJmuiden, and Den Helder are collaborating to establish a regional framework for recycling offshore wind turbines as the industry matures. The project Bridge of Europe is exploring the feasibility of a national hub for circular dismantling and turbine processing, with a study set for completion by late 2025.
The Port of Amsterdam's Vision 2040 focuses on clean navigation, circular industry, and renewable energy across various operational phases—from installation to decommissioning. A significant challenge remains the recycling of turbine blades, constructed from complex materials, which lacks established industrial standards. As the North Sea's wind capacity is projected to reach 71 GW by 2050, addressing end-of-life issues becomes critical for maintaining competitiveness in the evolving industrial landscape.
