Amsterdam has appointed Paul Lafond as the new chief wastewater plant operator after a year-long search. Lafond, certified as a 4A wastewater operator, began his position last week with a salary of $110,000.
His hiring comes as the city prepares for a $30.1 million upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant, which includes significant equipment updates to meet current standards. Funding will come from $14.3 million in grants and a $7.04 million no-interest loan, with potential additional support from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The city anticipates saving at least $150,000 annually on energy and maintenance costs post-upgrade. Lafond's role will enhance operation efficiency as the city transitions from a contracted operator to a full-time chief.
