Andalucía Hosts Half of Spain's Active Mines for Critical Minerals Essential for Energy Transition
According to the 2024 Mining Statistics from Miteco, Andalucía has ten out of 21 active mines in Spain extracting critical minerals like copper, fluorite, feldspar, and strontium. This region plays a key role in Europe's resource sovereignty amid geopolitical tensions. Companies such as Atalaya Mining and Sandfire Matsa operate copper mines, while Ostalé S.L. manages feldspar extraction. Andalucía is also the EU's sole producer of strontium, with Kandelium Minerals and Canteras Industriales operating in Granada. The region is developing a critical minerals map for future exploration.

Andalucía accounts for half of Spain's active mines extracting essential minerals for the EU, as reported in the 2024 Mining Statistics by Miteco. The region hosts ten mines out of 21 in the country, focusing on copper, fluorite, feldspar, and strontium.
Companies like Atalaya Mining and Sandfire Matsa operate in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, while Ostalé S.L. manages feldspar extraction in Cazalla de la Sierra. Granada is notable as the EU's only strontium producer. The IGME-CSIC collaborates with the Junta de Andalucía to identify critical mineral resources, enhancing the region's potential for future mining activities.
