Angelo Comandù Develops Energy-Saving Chimney System for Data Centers
Angelo Comandù has developed a chimney system that utilizes heat to save water and electricity, potentially achieving an 80% reduction in energy costs. This innovation is particularly relevant for data centers, which are projected to attract over €10 billion in investments in Italy from 2025 to 2026.
Comandù, alongside engineer Giovanni Bonomi, refined the design of a natural ventilation tower for data centers. The newly established company, Vertical Power Solution srl, aims to persuade energy-intensive companies to adopt this system, available in heights of 200 and 300 meters.
The functioning principle relies on the varying density of air with altitude, allowing warm air from computer rooms to rise and draw in cooler air from outside, while wind turbines generate energy. The integrated system requires an investment of €3.7 million for the 200-meter tower, promising annual energy savings of 10 megawatts and significant water savings. Interest has been expressed from Austria and a formal meeting has taken place regarding a data center project in Italy.
