Anne Arundel County Launches AI Weapons Detection Pilot in Schools
Anne Arundel County has initiated a pilot program to test Opengate's AI-driven weapons detection technology at four high schools. This initiative follows recent incidents highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures in educational environments.

The pilot program for Opengate technology started last week in Anne Arundel County at four selected high schools. The school district has contracted a Columbia-based provider for nearly $100,000 to lease the units until 2028, significantly less than the $2 million previously requested for a broader initiative.
The Opengate system employs electromagnetic field technology to identify concealed weapons and is currently being used in other regions, including Harford County and several southeastern states. Monitoring of the system’s performance will be conducted by the Office of School Security.
The outcome of this pilot may influence future decisions regarding weapons detection systems in the district. Risks include potential inaccuracies and psychological effects on students from regular screenings.
