Anthropic Launches Model Hardware Standard for AI Integration in Physical Devices
Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) as a research preview, facilitating AI control of laboratory and manufacturing equipment. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of AI integration, reducing setup time from weeks to minutes and enabling autonomous workflows.

Anthropic has unveiled its Model Hardware Standard (MHS), enabling AI agents to control devices like microscopes and robotic arms with a standardized interface. Developed in collaboration with HHMI Janelia Research Campus, MHS reduces integration time significantly and supports real-time adaptability in workflows.
Companies such as Amazon Web Services and Universal Robots are adding MHS support to their platforms, while early testing by Carnegie Mellon University and QuEra has demonstrated enhanced operational speed and accuracy in experiments. The standard will be open-sourced after the preview, inviting industry stakeholders to contribute feedback and refine its applications. This development may reshape automation in biotech and manufacturing sectors, though it currently cannot interface with devices lacking programmable capabilities.
