Apex Clean Energy Launches Virginia's First Wind Farm to Power Google Data Centers
Construction is underway on the Rocky Forge Wind Project, Virginia's first land-based wind farm in Botetourt County. Developed by Apex Clean Energy, the facility will have a capacity of 75 to 79.3 megawatts, enough to power approximately 21,000 homes.
GE turbines will be used, connecting to existing high-voltage transmission lines. The project is expected to become operational by late 2026, creating up to 250 construction jobs and generating $20 million to $30 million in tax revenue over its lifetime.
The electricity produced will be sold to Google under a long-term power purchase agreement. The project aligns with the Virginia Clean Economy Act, which mandates carbon-free electricity by 2045 to 2050.
