Armscor Dockyard Enhancements Support SA Navy Operations
Armscor dockyard in Simon's Town upgraded its syncrolift capabilities for SA Navy's new patrol vessels, enhancing operational efficiency. New equipment investments bolster infrastructure and training, addressing operational readiness challenges.

Armscor dockyard has enhanced its syncrolift capacity to accommodate the South African Navy's (SAN) multi-mission inshore patrol vessels (MMIPVs), starting with SAS King Sekhukhune I, commissioned in June 2022. A specialized docking cradle was engineered to facilitate stern-first docking, improving logistics and reducing repair time.
New equipment, including a Caterpillar 980 wheel loader and various cherry pickers and forklifts, has been introduced to modernize the facility. Additionally, the refurbishment of the penstock doors in the Selborne Graving Dry Dock was completed after a failure prompted immediate action. Despite these advancements, concerns were raised by SAN leadership regarding Armscor's management performance, which impacts operational readiness and national security.
