Asda Reports 20 Million Coffee Pods Returned Through Podback Recycling Scheme
Asda has reported the return of 20 million coffee pods through the Podback recycling scheme, with over 250,000 bags received since January 2025. Customers can drop used pods at participating Asda toYou counters. The initiative recycles coffee grounds into renewable energy and soil improver, while aluminium and plastic are repurposed into new products. Podback's partnership with Asda has shown positive results in recycling engagement.

Asda has announced that 20 million coffee pods have been returned as part of the Podback recycling scheme, with over 250,000 bags collected through its toYou counters since January 2025. Due to their size and organic residues, coffee pods are challenging to recycle via kerbside collections.
The scheme allows customers to fill Podback bags and drop them at participating counters, with all returned pods recycled in the UK. Coffee grounds are converted into renewable energy, while aluminium and plastic are processed into products such as drinks cans and garden furniture. The partnership aims to simplify recycling, leading to increased customer participation.
