Assam Power Distribution Company Plans to Meet 3,150 MW Peak Demand by 2026-27

HYDRO POWER

Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) aims to meet a projected peak demand of 3,150 MW in FY 2026-27 due to a significant increase in power consumption, which rose from 22.57 million units (MUs) in FY 2016-17 to 43.15 MUs by September 2025. Current summer peak demand ranges from 1,350 MW to 2,812 MW, while winter demand varies from 800 MW to 1,850 MW.

To address this, APDCL has established short-term and long-term power procurement plans, including securing 200 MW of short-term power, 1,000 MW from grid-connected pumped storage projects, and 3,200 MW from coal-based thermal sources. Additionally, 278 MW has been allocated to Assam under a 500 MW long-term thermal power tender from Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), bringing the total entitlement to approximately 2,780 MW. These measures are designed to ensure a reliable power supply for Assam's future energy needs.
