Assam Protests Against Land Transfers to Corporations Threatening Tribal Rights

HYDRO POWER

Political parties and social organizations in Dima Hasao district, Assam, have accused the state government and the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council of transferring tribal land to corporate interests, risking large-scale displacement. A memorandum submitted to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya following a protest rally on January 31, 2026, highlighted concerns over illegal land alienation for mining, cement manufacturing, and hydropower projects.

Over 9,000 bighas of tribal land have reportedly been allotted for limestone mining, impacting seven villages and involving companies such as Ambuja Cements and Dalmia Bharat. The groups claimed that land allotments overlap with key biodiversity areas, threatening endangered species and disrupting elephant corridors.

They also raised issues regarding a 1,250 MW hydropower project that could displace three villages. Allegations include lack of Social Impact Assessments and the misallocation of compensation, leading to calls for immediate intervention from the Governor.
