Astroscale UK to Lead ESA's In-Orbit Satellite Refurbishment Mission
Astroscale UK has been selected by the European Space Agency to lead the In-Orbit Refurbishment and Upgrading Service project, in collaboration with BAE Systems. A £350,000 Phase A study will evaluate robotic systems for satellite refurbishment in orbit and its commercial viability, aiming to create methods for upgrading subsystems like batteries and solar panels, thereby promoting sustainability in the space economy.

The European Space Agency has selected Astroscale UK to lead the In-Orbit Refurbishment and Upgrading Service project, collaborating with BAE Systems. A £350,000 Phase A study over eight months will assess robotic systems for satellite refurbishment in orbit and its commercial viability. The study aims to establish a method for upgrading subsystems like batteries and solar panels, potentially shifting the space economy from single-use satellites to sustainable servicing.
