Athens Approves Water and Sewer Rate Increases to Fund Wastewater Treatment Upgrades
Athens city leaders approved water and sewer rate increases over the next four years to fund upgrades at the wastewater treatment plant. A $20 million loan will support the upgrades, leading to annual water rate increases of 2.5% and sewer rate increases of 7.5% for the first two years, followed by 5% for the next two years. By 2030, the average utility customer will pay over $13 more per month for services, but rates will remain below the national average.

Athens city officials approved rate increases for water and sewage services over the next four years to fund upgrades at the wastewater treatment plant, supported by a $20 million loan. Water rates will rise by 2.5% annually, while sewer rates will increase by 7.5% for the first two years and 5% for the following two years.
By 2030, the average customer will pay more than $13 extra per month. The 7.5% sewer rate increase takes effect on April 1, and the 2.5% water rate increase takes effect on October 1. Mayor Ronnie Marks emphasized the necessity of infrastructure expansion for the growing community.
