The proposed data center is near Ben Epps Airport. Community leaders, including Rep. Eric Gisler and Commissioner Ovita Thornton, emphasize the need for sustainability and regulations, citing the potential negative effects of data centers on electricity, water use, and local job creation. An ordinance addressing data center parameters is expected to be voted on next month.

The Athens Mayor and Commission have extended a moratorium on new data centers until June 5 due to concerns about environmental impacts and the ability of Athens Clarke-County (ACC) to support them. A proposed data center would be located on the Athena Studios property near Ben Epps Airport.
Community leaders, including Georgia House Rep. Eric Gisler and ACC Commissioner Ovita Thornton, emphasize the need for sustainable practices and regulations. Concerns include high power and water usage, short-term job creation, and the potential for data centers to negatively affect local housing. The commission plans to vote on an ordinance next month to set parameters for data centers.
