Atlas Renewable Energy Halts $1 Billion Investment in Brazil Due to Curtailment Issues
Atlas Renewable Energy has frozen $1 billion in investments in Brazil, impacting 1.5 GW of projects, due to curtailment rates of 15-25%. This decision is a response to the ongoing challenges in Brazil's electricity market, which may affect future renewable energy development.

Atlas Renewable Energy has suspended $1 billion in new investments in Brazil, affecting approximately 1.5 GW of solar and wind projects set for 2025 and 2026. CEO Carlos Barrera reported curtailment rates between 15% and 25% in Q2, which has hindered profitability for existing assets.
Brazil's electricity market structure complicates matters for developers forced to buy replacement electricity at elevated prices due to grid congestion. Fitch Ratings has issued negative outlooks for 11 Brazilian renewable projects, predicting ongoing curtailment issues through 2030. Despite these challenges, Barrera anticipates a gradual decline in curtailment as demand rises, though no major reforms are expected before 2028.
