AUDITOR-GENERAL REPORT: $7 Billion Redback Vehicle Procurement Mismanaged by Defence
The Australian Defence Department's procurement of 129 Redback infantry fighting vehicles from Hanwha is under scrutiny, revealing significant mismanagement and penalties totaling $483,929 due to late payments. This project illustrates ongoing issues with bespoke solutions over off-the-shelf options, raising concerns about future project timelines and budget efficiency.

The Australian National Audit Office reported that the Defence Department's procurement of 129 Redback infantry fighting vehicles from Hanwha, costing $7 billion, is mismanaged, resulting in $483,929 in penalties due to delayed payments. As of October 2025, Defence incurred $148,129 in interest penalties, with an outstanding amount of $335,889.
The project is at risk of failing to deliver fully capable vehicles by the 2028 deadline, exacerbated by unresolved mobility and lethality risks. Despite the Albanese government's planned reforms and the establishment of an independent Defence delivery agency by 2026, concerns about procurement oversight and accountability remain high.
