Austin Energy Approves $172 Million Solar Investments to Boost Renewable Capacity
Austin Energy has secured approvals for up to $172 million in solar generation and grid resilience investments. This initiative is expected to enhance local energy production significantly, with new solar installations across city properties and a novel solar project on a former landfill set to open by 2028.

Austin Energy is advancing solar generation projects totaling up to $172 million, aimed at increasing grid resilience and renewable energy capacity. These projects will add dozens of megawatts to the grid, where 1 MW can support approximately 250 residential customers.
The UPower solar project, utilizing land from a closed municipal landfill, is expected to be operational by 2028. Additionally, a partnership with Base will enhance battery storage capabilities, reaching up to 40 MW over 18 months.
The city is also refining potential sites for solar installations, now totaling around 100, ahead of an expiration deadline for federal solar tax credits. These initiatives indicate a strategic move toward sustainable energy solutions and aim to provide reliable electricity while mitigating price risks in the Austin Energy Load Zone.
