Australia Imposes Sanctions on Balochistan Liberation Army for Terrorism
Australia has enacted counter-terrorism financing sanctions against the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) due to its involvement in violent attacks in Pakistan. This decision aims to disrupt the group's financial operations and operational capabilities amidst ongoing security threats in the region.
Australia has sanctioned the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its leaders for their role in violent attacks in Pakistan, including the hijacking of the Jaffar Express train in March 2025 and assaults on Chinese workers. The sanctions, announced by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, are designed to hinder the BLA's ability to finance operations and recruit members.
The U.S. previously designated the BLA as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, highlighting the group's ongoing threat in Balochistan. Pakistan's government asserts that it is investing in the province to improve local conditions, countering claims of exploitation by separatist groups.
