Australia Launches National AI Plan to Develop Sovereign AI Infrastructure
Australia has advanced its AI maturity with the release of the National AI Plan and the AI Plan for the Australian Public Service, emphasizing sovereign AI infrastructure as crucial for economic and security resilience. The plans advocate for centralized procurement, training, and AI infrastructure, with mandates to appoint Chief AI Officers in every agency to ensure safe access to AI.
The GovAI Hosting Platform, central to this initiative, consolidates AI investment and expertise while mitigating risks associated with unmanaged AI use. Currently in trial, it supports low-risk public datasets using Microsoft Azure, with plans to expand to AWS and Google Cloud.
The infrastructure aims to secure sensitive applications and data residency, addressing concerns about the US CLOUD Act and the need for jurisdictional control over classified data. The shift to private AI infrastructure is positioned as essential for maintaining control, enhancing digital resilience, and managing costs associated with public cloud services.
