Australia's Transition: From Resource Exporter to Potential Manufacturing Hub
Australia's government is reassessing its manufacturing strategy, aiming to bolster domestic production amid supply chain vulnerabilities. The focus is on critical minerals and renewable energy as key sectors for future growth.

The Australian government has initiated a pre-feasibility study for a new large-scale oil refinery, signaling a push to enhance domestic industrial capacity. Australia's manufacturing sector, currently contributing about 5% to GDP, has seen a significant decline since the 1970s, primarily due to a shift towards services and mining.
In 2024-25, the mining sector is projected to add $260.57 billion to the economy, highlighting its dominance. The Future Made in Australia policy aims to expand local manufacturing, particularly in renewable energy and critical minerals, amidst global supply chain disruptions. Experts suggest focusing on industries that enhance national resilience, such as defence manufacturing and critical minerals processing, rather than attempting to revive past manufacturing capabilities.
