Austria Launches First Agrovoltaic Power Plant for Trains
Austria has inaugurated its first agrovoltaic photovoltaic plant, designed to provide electricity for its railway network. This innovative facility combines renewable energy production with organic farming, utilizing 6.6 MWp capacity to generate an estimated 8.3 GWh annually, enough to power 32,500 train trips.

The agrovoltaic facility in Donnerskirchen features a solar tracker system, maximizing energy output while allowing simultaneous agricultural use of the land. Directly connected to the railway power grid, it minimizes energy loss and enhances efficiency.
With the capability to produce approximately eight million kWh of solar energy each year, this project emphasizes renewable energy's role in bolstering Austria's energy independence. Additionally, the design prioritizes ecological preservation by maintaining natural drainage and promoting local biodiversity through new plantings, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating agriculture with renewable energy solutions.
