AWS European Sovereign Cloud Project Initiated Near Berlin with €7.8 Billion Investment
A major data center project, the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, is set to begin construction in February 2026 with an investment of €7.8 billion. This initiative aims to enhance Europe's cloud computing capacity while raising concerns about local impacts and data sovereignty across the region.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud project, located in Massen-Niederlausitz, will occupy 12 hectares and feature a planned capacity of 300 megawatts. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for February 5, 2026, with a total investment of €7.8 billion expected by 2040.
Concurrently, local communities express anxiety over the development, which reflects broader geopolitical concerns regarding data sovereignty, especially in light of ongoing conflicts and regulatory changes across Europe. As global spending on data centers is projected to reach $7 trillion by 2030, the implications for local economies and infrastructure could be significant, especially as companies adapt to evolving security and privacy demands.
