Banca d'Italia Unveils Climate Transition Plan Aiming for Net Zero by 2050

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

On January 29, 2026, Banca d'Italia launched its "Climate Transition Plan" targeting a 90% reduction in emissions by 2050. The plan outlines measures to achieve net zero carbon footprint based on 2019 levels, with intermediate goals set for 2035: a two-thirds reduction in direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) emissions, and a 40% reduction in other indirect emissions (Scope 3).

The plan includes replacing gas boilers with heat pump systems, utilizing renewable electricity, and expanding on-site solar production. Additionally, Banca d'Italia will implement innovative Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) to stabilize energy costs.

The strategy also emphasizes hybrid work models, sustainable banknote production, and the development of an energy-efficient data center. An internal carbon pricing mechanism will be introduced by 2028 to evaluate procurement decisions. The initiative includes urban reforestation projects and participation in international sustainable finance networks.
