Bangladesh Drafts National AI Policy 2026-2030 to Foster Innovation and Economic Growth

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Bangladesh has introduced a draft National AI Policy for 2026-2030 to guide AI use across sectors, aiming for homegrown innovation and inclusive growth. This policy aligns with Vision 2041 and UN sustainable development goals.

It emphasizes digital sovereignty and aims to develop a Bangla-based large language model to preserve cultural heritage. The government plans to implement a National AI Compute Strategy, hosting centralised GPUs at the National Data Center.

Funding of Tk 200 to Tk 250 crore will support research through an AI Innovation Fund. The policy establishes a risk-based regulatory framework for AI systems and creates an Independent Oversight Committee to monitor ethical standards.

It anticipates productivity gains but warns that automation may threaten 60.8% of garment jobs by 2041. AI education will be integrated into schools, focusing on agriculture and healthcare applications. The policy will remain in effect until replaced by a permanent Artificial Intelligence Act in 2030.
