Bangladesh Initiates Padma Barrage Project with Tk34,608 Crore Investment
Bangladesh has launched the Padma Barrage project with an initial investment of Tk34,608 crore, part of a total estimated cost of Tk50,443.64 crore. The project, designed to manage river flow and enhance agricultural productivity, will feature 78 spillway gates and generate approximately 113 megawatts of hydropower, benefiting around 1.9 million hectares of land. Completion is anticipated between March 2026 and June 2033, with projected annual financial gains of Tk73,600 crore.

Bangladesh plans to implement the Padma Barrage project, with an estimated total cost of Tk50,443.64 crore, in two phases, starting with Tk34,608 crore for the first phase. The project aims to control river flow and boost agriculture in the region.
Scheduled for completion between March 2026 and June 2033, the barrage will feature 78 spillway gates and generate around 113 megawatts of hydropower. It aims to restore water flow to several rivers affected by upstream flow reduction due to India's Farakka Barrage. The project is expected to provide irrigation to approximately 1.9 million hectares and deliver annual financial benefits of Tk73,600 crore.
