Bangladesh Initiates Padma Barrage Project with Tk34,608 Crore Investment
HYDRO POWER
Bangladesh plans to implement the Padma Barrage project, with an estimated total cost of Tk50,443.64 crore, in two phases, starting with Tk34,608 crore for the first phase. The project aims to control river flow and boost agriculture in the region.
Scheduled for completion between March 2026 and June 2033, the barrage will feature 78 spillway gates and generate around 113 megawatts of hydropower. It aims to restore water flow to several rivers affected by upstream flow reduction due to India's Farakka Barrage. The project is expected to provide irrigation to approximately 1.9 million hectares and deliver annual financial benefits of Tk73,600 crore.
