Bangladesh Targets 8.5GW Solar Capacity by 2035 Amidst Dominant Thermal Power Landscape
Bangladesh's electricity sector is set for a significant shift, with solar capacity expected to surge to 8.5GW by 2035, driven by strong government incentives. The overall renewable energy capacity is projected to reach approximately 9GW, although thermal power will remain the primary energy source.

Projected solar photovoltaic capacity in Bangladesh is anticipated to rise from 1.3GW in 2025 to nearly 8.5GW by 2035. Total renewable energy capacity is expected to hit around 9GW, with solar leading the additions, supported by policies like tax holidays and VAT relief.
Thermal power, primarily gas-fired, is expected to grow from 15.3GW in 2025 to 20.1GW by 2035, while coal will reach about 7.7GW. Summit Group plans a $3 billion investment in renewables, targeting solar, wind, and hydropower.
Local developers are also integral to the growth of rooftop solar systems, which are critical due to land constraints. The planned expansion reflects Bangladesh’s commitment to increasing renewable energy's share in the energy mix despite existing challenges.
