Barber County Considers Google Data Center Proposal with Potential for Revenue Growth

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Barber County is debating a proposal for a Google data center, with discussions involving county commissioners, Google representatives, and local residents. The project, which could be located near Sharon, aims to bring additional revenue to the area.

County Commissioner Bryan Quick is open to the proposal but requires more information on its long-term impacts. Local resident Herbie Landwehr expressed concerns about preserving the community's agricultural identity.

Lindsay Campbell, CEO of Southern Pioneer Electric, noted that while utility costs are rising, the data center could help offset these expenses. Quick emphasized the importance of maintaining low taxation for the small population. Google indicated that if approved, construction would likely start in 2027.
