Barkerville Gold Mines Fined Over $162K for Environmental Violations
Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd. has been penalized $162,000 for failing to monitor its mining operations and discharging toxic metals into the Cariboo watershed. The fines highlight ongoing regulatory compliance issues and environmental impacts in the region, raising concerns among local Indigenous communities.

Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd. (BGM) faces a $162,000 fine from B.C.'s Ministry of Environment and Parks for failing to conduct 174 required wastewater samples and for leaking mine waste into the Cariboo watershed.
The company has been non-compliant with wastewater regulations multiple times, exceeding cadmium, nickel, and iron limits significantly in 2023 and 2024. This follows a history of violations that led to a prior penalty of $276,360 for similar issues.
The B.C. government recently approved BGM's Caribou Gold project, which is expected to yield 1.89 million ounces of gold over the next decade. Ongoing failures raise questions about the adequacy of environmental monitoring and collaboration with affected Indigenous communities.
