Battery-Electric Tugboats Surge in 2025 with New Fuels and Corporate Growth
In 2025, the tug and salvage industry saw a significant shift towards battery-electric and alternative fuel vessels, driven by new charters for LNG carrier support and corporate consolidation. China emerged as the leader in battery-electric tugboats, surpassing British Columbia, while Panama gained prominence in the hybrid tug market. A total of 15 energy storage-equipped tugs were delivered, reflecting the industry's commitment to environmental sustainability and the enhancement of port charging infrastructure.

In 2025, the tug and salvage industry introduced fleets of battery-electric tugs and vessels powered by alternative fuels, including hydrogen and methanol. New charters for tug fleets supporting LNG carriers emerged due to growth in export and import terminals, while industry consolidation occurred through corporate acquisitions.
China surpassed British Columbia as the leading location for battery-electric tugboats, with eight electric tugs in operation. Panama has also become a notable market for hybrid-propelled tugs. A total of 15 tugs equipped with energy storage systems were delivered in 2025, reflecting a trend toward environmental sustainability.
Multiple operators are renewing fleets with battery-electric tugs as ports enhance charging infrastructure to support their operations. Currently, five battery-electric tugs are operational in British Columbia and another five in Turkey.
