Battery Storage Secures 576MW in UK Capacity Market Auction for 2026/2027
ENERGY STORAGE
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) completed its Capacity Market auction for the 2026/2027 delivery year, securing 7,192MW of commitments, with battery energy storage systems (BESS) winning 576MW, or 8.02% of the total. Gas and nuclear filled 80% of capacity obligations.
The auction clearing price was £5/kw/year, a significant decrease from the previous year. Other technologies, such as wind and solar, won minimal obligations, while demand side response achieved 638MW, totaling 8.88%.
Notable BESS operators include Amp Clean Energy, EDF, and RWE. NESO plans to conduct a T-4 auction for 2028/2029, which typically secures larger capacity.
