Bavaria Expands Data Center Capacity, Trails Behind Hessen and Berlin
A new study reveals Bavaria's data center capacity growth, but it remains significantly lower than Hessen and Berlin, with installed capacity at 420 MW. The region's focus on AI and HPC applications is increasing, projected to reach 250 MW by 2030, yet challenges in energy supply and infrastructure persist.

Bavaria's data center capacity is currently 420 MW, significantly lagging behind Hessen's 1,131 MW. The Borderstep study indicates that on-premises facilities are predominant, with co-location facilities growing, particularly in Munich, which is expected to account for nearly 70% of Bavaria's co-location capacity.
AI and HPC applications comprise over 20% of the state's total capacity, the highest percentage nationwide. By 2030, AI and HPC installations are projected to grow to around 250 MW, representing about 45% of Bavaria’s total capacity, contingent on infrastructure improvements.
The state faces challenges with energy supply, as data center consumption is estimated to reach 3.1 terawatt-hours by 2025. The impact of energy efficiency regulations may require data centers to source 100% of their energy from renewables by 2027.
