B.C. and Simpcw First Nation Finalize Environmental Assessment Agreement for Yellowhead Copper Project
An agreement has been reached between British Columbia and the Simpcw First Nation for the Yellowhead Copper mining project, requiring Simpcw's consent for proceeding. This collaboration will streamline environmental assessments and uphold Indigenous governance in resource management.

British Columbia's Environmental Assessment Office has entered into a consent agreement with the Simpcw First Nation concerning the Yellowhead Copper project proposed by Trekor Metals Limited, located approximately 150 km northeast of Kamloops. The agreement mandates Simpcw's consent and a provincial environmental assessment certificate for the project to advance, marking a significant step in Indigenous governance.
The assessment process commenced for Simpcw in May 2024, with B.C.'s process beginning in July 2025. The EAO will continue to engage with potentially affected First Nations and local governments throughout the assessment. This framework not only clarifies the current project review but also sets a precedent for future mining ventures in Simpcw territory, emphasizing the importance of Indigenous stewardship and community involvement.
