B.C. Approves Copper Mountain Mine Expansion Amid Indigenous Opposition
The B.C. provincial government has approved the expansion of Copper Mountain Mine near Princeton, extending operations until 2047 and creating 800 local jobs. Indigenous groups, however, condemn the decision, claiming lack of informed consent despite recent participation agreements.

On February 20, the B.C. provincial government approved the expansion of Copper Mountain Mine near Princeton, extending its operational life until 2047 and reopening the Ingerbelle gold and copper mine owned by Hudbay Minerals. The expansion includes raising the tailing dam by 87 meters and is expected to create approximately 800 jobs for the local community. Despite the government's assertion of Indigenous engagement in the review process, the Upper and Lower Similkameen nations criticized the approval, stating that it lacked prior and informed consent.
