British Columbia Hydro is set to begin the procurement process for a 100-megawatt battery storage facility in North Cowichan, aimed at improving Vancouver Island's electrical grid reliability. The project, expected to be operational by 2030, will be adjacent to the Vancouver Island Terminal substation and is part of a larger initiative to increase provincial battery capacity to 500 megawatts.
This facility will help manage peak electricity demands and prevent blackouts. B.C. Hydro has previously engaged in smaller battery projects but this represents a significant scale-up. As Canada aims to double its energy storage capacity to 1,149 megawatts by 2030, this project underscores the need for modernized energy infrastructure amid increasing demand.
