Bechtel Contracts ABB for Automation Work on NextDecade's Rio Grande LNG Trains 4 and 5
NextDecade's contractor Bechtel has awarded ABB additional work on Trains 4 and 5 of the Rio Grande LNG plant in Brownsville, Texas. The scope includes an integrated control and safety system and electrical solutions, building on previous work for Trains 1-3. The project is expected to enhance operational efficiency, with Train 4 operations starting in 2030 and Train 5 in 2031.

Bechtel Corp. has awarded ABB Ltd. additional automation and electrical solution orders for Trains 4 and 5 of NextDecade's Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) plant in Brownsville, Texas. The orders were booked in 2025 and extend ABB's previous work on Trains 1-3, totaling 17 million tonnes/year.
The scope includes an integrated control and safety system and an electrical controls and monitoring system. ABB will also supply medium-voltage drives, transformers, and switchgear. Local equipment buildings for Trains 4 and 5 will streamline installation. Phase 1 of RGLNG is under construction and expected to begin operations in 2027, with Trains 4 and 5 expected to start operations in 2030 and 2031, respectively.
