Belen has received $21 million in funding for the rehabilitation of its 44-year-old wastewater treatment plant, with $18.9 million as a grant and $2.1 million as a loan. This project, which has been prioritized since 2017, addresses aging infrastructure and compliance with stricter regulations.
Planned upgrades include a new ultraviolet light disinfection system, energy efficiency improvements, and enhanced sludge handling. The city has until September to finalize project plans and permits. Previous funding sources include $2 million from New Mexico Capital Outlay and $1 million from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. The project is crucial for supporting Belen's growth and ensuring reliable wastewater management.
