Belgium Increases F-16 Donation to Ukraine Amid Delays
Belgium is set to deliver 52 F-16s to Ukraine, up from an initial pledge of 30, but significant delays remain. The first deliveries are not expected until 2026, as Belgium faces challenges in integrating new F-35 aircraft, affecting the timeline for F-16 transfers.
Belgium has committed to sending a total of 52 F-16 Fighting Falcons to Ukraine, an increase from the 30 previously pledged. However, the deliveries will be staggered, with only three expected in 2026, followed by five in 2027, 15 in 2028, and 27 in 2029, due to delays in receiving F-35A Lightning IIs.
The Belgian military has operated F-16s since 1979, with an estimated fleet of 160 aircraft. The proposed NATO support for Ukraine totals $143 billion annually, reflecting frustrations among member states regarding unequal contributions. The European Council approved a 90 billion euro loan package for Ukraine, aimed at expanding domestic defense production in areas like drone manufacturing.
